This unique program supports first-generation students, enrolled at the Woodbury School of Business, to achieve their higher education goals. Like many others, these students face two challenges to complete graduation: a sense of belonging and financial means. They deserve Hope for a different future with a program to address both difficulties.
First-generation students often experience and must overcome the perception that they don’t belong at a university due to feelings of insufficient academic preparation or limited familial support. These perceptions can be addressed within a supportive community of trained advisors and peers sharing the same academic pursuits and background. Within this team, students will participate in regular activities to foster resilience and professional growth. These activities encompass career strategy sessions, peer mentoring, and leadership certifications designed to build transferrable business skills and confidence to pursue graduation.
Since financial strain remains the greatest hindrance to first-generation students, Hope Scholar Program participants may apply and qualify for a renewable scholarship as they meet eligibility requirements.
You can empower the next generation of business leaders by giving to the Hope Scholars Program today.
As Hope Scholars program manager, I am excited to help create a stronger sense of belonging and a community of support for first-generation students. I understand the challenges – I am a first-generation UVU graduate. These students have a unique opportunity to write a new chapter in their family histories and to create needed change in their communities. The Hope Scholars program will provide Woodbury School of Business students with opportunities to specifically connect with fellow first-generation students in the same programs. Students will participate in a peer mentoring program and attend monthly workshops to learn how to navigate the “hidden curriculum” of campus culture and essential life skills that will positively impact many aspects of their lives and for the long-term. The Hope Scholars program creates a unique community where first-generation students and alumni can rally with faculty and staff to provide support and guidance for these amazing students.
