UVU Native American Initiative’s 2023 Powwow

OCTOBER 16, 2023|  By Halen Hubbard

Utah Valley University’s (UVU) Native American Initiative is excited to host its annual UVU Powwow. Attendees will be treated to dancing competitions and drumming contests. Vendors will sell Native-made arts, food, and other cultural items to support local Native American and Indigenous small businesses. ALL are welcome to join the festivities to mark the start of Native American Heritage Month.

The Native American Initiative is dedicated to enriching the experiences of Native American students by providing a range of cultural events, resources, and programs. The initiative strives to support both Indigenous people within the UVU and the broader Utah communities.

Among the resources offered by UVU are advisors and mentors who specialize in Native American support. They assist students with vital aspects like admissions, registration, scholarships, and financial aid. In addition, the Native American Club has opportunities for student involvement in leadership, tutoring, performance, and dance groups.

The event will take place at UVU’s Lockhart Arena (800 W University Pkwy, Orem, UT 84058) on November 3 and 4 with grand entry times: Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. On Friday, attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the meaning behind Native dances, drumming, regalia, and traditions. Then, a celebration of dance and music will come alive and bring the community together on Saturday.
