The program provides students a serious and engaged academic learning opportunity on Chinese language, culture, history, and society through well-designed classroom instruction, one-on-one tutoring, hands-on activities, and site visits of schools, hospitals, museums, historical sites, government institutions, media firms, and NGOs while directly interacting with Chinese students, scholars, professionals, and Chinese people in different disciplines and industries.
Chuxiong is known for its ancient history and for having one of the greatest Yi populations in Yunnan. Splendid mountains and gorgeous rivers are features of the city and the prefecture. It is a land of beauty and marvels. There are abundant cultural resources by combining natural beauty and historical cultural relics. Students will see the Chuxiong Prefecture Museum, the Zixi Mountain National Forest Park, the Theme Park of Yi ethnic group's Ten-Month Solar Calendar, among many other public parks and sightseeing spots.
Chuxiong is also best known as the excavation site of the earliest Homo sapiens in China and its distinctive landform--Earth Forest. Together with its neighboring counties of Sichuan, most Yi ethnic people of China inhabit this region. Besides Yi , there are many others groups like Han, Usu , Miao, Dai, Hui, Bai, Hani, Zhuang, just to name a few. All of them together present splendid and diverse ethnic cultures.
The city of Chuxiong has a population of almost 300,000 inhabitants. UVU students will have the opportunity to be involved and learn from the 26 diverse ethnic groups as they learn their culture and are able to practice their communicative skills . While at CNU, students will receive direct instruction by trained native educators who are conducting their practicum in Chinese as a Second Language .

Taiwan is a vibrant and culturally rich island known for its friendly locals, exquisite cuisine, and diverse landscapes. This program aims to provide an unforgettable educational experience for participants. Adding Taiwan to the program offers students a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of the Chinese language, culture, and history.

There are no pre- or post-travel course dates for this program.
Course pre-requisites may be waived for students admitted into the study abroad program by the faculty program director

Minimum G.P.A.: 2.0
Students with Academic Standings registration holds at the time of application received for falling below a 2.0 GPA in the previous semester(s) will not be allowed to study abroad and should not apply. Students who fall below a 2.0 GPA in the Spring semester may be withdrawn from their Summer study abroad program (possibly with no refund).

Physical requirements: Significant daily walking to and from classes, at museums, at cultural and historical sites, etc. Climbing the Great Wall, Stone Forest, Ethic Village, Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Shanghai Bund, Dali tour, etc. The weather might be usually hot and humid. The refrigerator might not be available for medications, substandard sanitation/utilities and facilities might be possible, especially the beds might be too hard to American students. Disability accommodation is not guaranteed.
Study Abroad typically involves a lot of walking! Make sure that you will be able to walk long distances over uneven surfaces.
Travel during the summer in foreign countries can be uncomfortably hot and humid. Air conditioning is not always available.
Students on study abroad must be able to independently navigate in a foreign country and be able to follow specific instructions. This may include figuring out and using public transportation, making their way through airports, negotiating large crowds, and making smart decisions related to their own safety in unfamiliar circumstances.

The program fee covers a few group meals, in-country transportation, excursions, Chinese visa application fees, and international insurance. The program fee does not include the listed Additional Estimated Costs.

Students over the age of 73 at the time of travel may be required to purchase a supplemental international health and evacuation insurance plan through GeoBlue (approx $200-$500+)
Students should be prepared to pay out-of-pocket for travel disruptions including lost luggage, possible COVID tests or quarantine stays if required by the host country for entry or exit, missed flights, etc.
All students are required to pay a $75 non-refundable application fee .
*UVU study abroad tuition is charged as an additional study abroad fee in your student account. It is separate from the study abroad program fee and regular UVU summer tuition. It is not factored into the "equal payment" calculation of the UVU Tuition Table. Study Abroad students are advised to only take study abroad courses during the block of their study abroad program.

UVU Faculty/Staff Dependent Tuition Waiver benefits may not be used to pay for study abroad tuition or fees.
