He received his doctorate in educational leadership from Lehigh University, his M.Ed. in educational administration from Arizona State University, and his B.A. in history from Brigham Young University. He worked for 25 years in public education in Mesa, Arizona, as a teacher and administrator, was named outstanding principal and served as the President of the Mesa Association of School Administrators. He served as an international school administrator in China for 13 years. During his international years, he served as a principal, head of school, and as the Vice President Asia-Pacific for International School Services. He also served as the Vice President of the Board of Trustees of the Association of China and Mongolia International Schools and as a board member of the Gilbert (AZ) Sister Cities Association.
