Dr. Benjamin A. Johnson is Associate Professor in the Department of Student Leadership and Success Studies at Utah Valley University. He received a Ph.D. in Educational Philosophy and Psychology (Educational Policy & Leadership) from The Ohio State University. He regularly trains adjunct faculty and has successfully mentored students on independent-research projects and co-founded (with students), The Journal of Student Leadership, a double-blind peer-reviewed journal that addresses issues relevant to leadership and is published in hardcopy and online. His service learning and community engagement have focused on helping students from underrepresented communities excel during their first year of college.
Johnson’s scholarly work has included publications and conference presentations related to educational design, self-regulated learning, metacognition, student use of technology, service learning, higher-education leadership, faculty-student mentoring, and first-year student experiences. He has published manuscripts in teaching-related journals and is currently working with a team, focused on validation and application of metacognitive instruments. He regularly presents on his scholarly work at local and national conferences and meetings.
Ben enjoys hiking, ultimate frisbee, Dutch Golden Age paintings, trying out his Dutch and French, spending time with his family and friends, and working with great students.

For much of the past 10 years, since I became certified as a Service-Learning faculty member, I have carried high-impact service learning activities. The attached email documents some of those activities. As a pedagogy, service learning, based on experiential education, helps students make important real-world connections.
On September 27, 2023, I was approved by the UVU Graduate Council as a Graduate Faculty Full Member. Among other criteria, Full Members in the School of Education meet the following minimum criteria_
- A record of recent effective teaching, including best practices in student-centered pedagogy, effective assessments, and professional and ethical responsibility.
- "A faculty member applying to become a graduate faculty full member should Initiate and/or collaborate in empirical and theoretical research that enhances knowledge about the faculty member’s area(s) of expertise in teaching and learning. This research should lead to a combination of the two or more of the following every five years_ presentations of scholarly work; peer-reviewed, scholarly work; technical publications for the University or SOE; or other scholarly activities (as approved by the SOE Dean)."
While I have not yet taught a graduate level course, I became certified so that if the need arose, I would be ready. This demonstrates my proactive nature and highlights my interest in taking part in challenging projects.
I believe that my exemplary service, particularly at the department, university, and professional levels qualified me for this college-level award (note: only one of these awards was offered per year by the college).
During June of 2022, I had a student with approved accommodations, and these included live-transcriptions during my lecture and class activities. When one of the transcribers (the lead, Katie) could not identify a replacement, I paced the class, so that there would be appropriate moments for breaks. This took a bit of on-the-fly planning, but it worked out well, and I'm grateful for Katie's kinds words, who recognized my attempt to make the learning experience as smooth as possible for all stakeholders in the learning environment.
The UVU Global and Intercultural Committee asked for nominations from students for this faculty award. I was given this award during the G/I student banquet (April 27, 2022) celebrating the student G/I Distinction completion.
I have enclosed the email from Dr. Bryan Waite and a picture of the award itself which reads_
"Global/Intercultural
2021-2022
Faculty Award
Presented to
Benjamin Johnson
in appreciation for your
hard work and dedication
furthering UVU's commitment
to Global/Intercultural competence"
While the application process was fairly rigorous for this Senior Fellow Application at the International Higher Education Academy, I was grateful I was nominated and mentored by Wendy Athens (former Office of Teaching and Learning Director). She believed that I could easily demonstrate my exemplary work as a mentor to other faculty both at the university and department levels. I am grateful to her assistance and the letter writers who wrote on my behalf.
