Awards

American Graphic Design Award

Graphic Design USA

I received an American Graphic Design Award from Graphic Design USA for this piece entitled Justice. It is inspired by the work of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) which is “committed to…challenging racial and economic injustice” (eji.org). Installed on a 2 ft. x 3 ft. wood panel and wrapped with real barbed wire, the design features 12 individuals who were originally sentenced to life without parole or to be executed. They were all taken under the wing of the EJI and all but two were either released from prison or received a shorter sentence. The verity expressed in the text on the left is attributed to EJI founder, Bryan Stevenson.

My certificate and images of my work have been uploaded as a single supporting document.

100 Show Selected Entry

American Institute of Graphic Arts

My submission entitled Among Fields and August Oak was honored as a selected entry by the Salt Lake City chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts. This triptych is based on the respective themes of contentment, heartache, and cautious optimism. As with several of my other projects, I originated all of the photography, copywriting, and design.

American Graphic Design Award

Graphic Design USA

I received an American Graphic Design Award from Graphic Design USA for the design of a 156-page book entitled Light the Dark. The book was produced to help raise funds for a non-profit organization in Chicago named Watts of Love. It features a narrative about their mission as well as photos of past expeditions to countries including the Philippines, Malawi, Nepal, and Ethiopia. My work was published in the 2021 Design Annual.

Alumni Outstanding Educator Award

Utah Valley University School of the Arts

In spring 2020, I was honored as the recipient of the UVU Alumni Association Outstanding Educator of the Year award for the School of the Arts. This was particularly gratifying because the “award is voted upon by graduating students.” After being notified by Kevin Walkenhorst, Senior Director of Alumni Relations, he further explained that “alumni award recipients are those professors who the students indicate have had the greatest influence on them and their career choice.”

The congratulatory letter I received has been uploaded as a supporting document.
