Don Capener

Biography

Don Capener serves as the Dean-Continuing Education. He oversees UVU's satellite campuses, and non-credit programs through executive and community education and other special projects. Appointed Associate Dean of the Woodbury School of Business in 2019, Professor Capener is the former business dean at Jacksonville University (JU). As associate dean, Dr. Capener oversaw all Woodbury graduate programs, strategic management, and organizational leadership faculty. He was a prominent leader in the Florida business community and is an experienced AACSB mentor and peer reviewer. Capener led Woodbury's reaccreditation efforts in 2022. Over eight years at JU, Capener started several business programs such as the DBA program which grew into one of the top programs globally according to CEO Magazine. His research interests center around entrepreneurial ecosystems and international business.

Dr. Capener launched several new companies and succeeded in several senior management roles at international advertising agencies before entering academia full-time in 2001.

Early in his career, Capener started Above the Rim Apparel with his brother while running their advertising agency in San Diego. Both companies grew into profitable ventures and were sold in 1994. Dean Capener taught advertising and marketing at Waseda University in Tokyo and is fluent in the Japanese language. As CMO of a successful marketing technology firm, Netcentives, Capener was instrumental in taking the marketing technology firm public via NASDAQ in 1999. Dr. Capener earned a Ph.D. in international management from the International School of Management in Paris. His Master of Business Administration degree was conferred from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Arizona. Dr. Capener earned a bachelor's degree in political science, economics, and Asian studies from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
