The Capitol Reef Field Station has two dorm buildings. Each building has four bedrooms with different layouts to accommodate up to twelve beds per building. Each room has its own handicap accessible bathroom, with a common area in each dormitory. This tour includes two of the different bedroom layouts, the common living area, as well as highlights the Field Station’s passive cooling system.
The courtyard is where the different areas of the Capitol Reef Field Station come together. This tour takes visitors through the center of the facility where they can get to the dormitories, as well as the classroom building. The courtyard tour also features the facilities permeable pavement, that is designed to preserve the soil nutrients and discourage erosion, in addition to a view of each building’s passive heating system.
This tour highlights two features that make the field station truly unique. Upon arriving, students and faculty will park under solar panels that are powerful enough to supply guests with the power that they need. Additionally, they will see the water treatment building in which all water is treated for human use and consumption, after being drawn from the nearby Pleasant Creek.
The Kayenta building is also knowns as the classroom building. This tour takes visitors through a sitting area where guests can play games, hold class, and learn about their topic of study, the surrounding areas, and field station. This building takes a tour through this area, as well as the fully equipped kitchen with cleaning supplies, dishes, utensils, etc.
