Transportation

Overview

Part of the convenience of modern society is our ability to safely and quickly transport ourselves for purposes of school, work, and our personal interests. This convenience comes at a cost that we all must bear. In the United States, emissions from transportation account for almost 30 percent of our total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which makes it the country's largest GHG contributor (Environmental Protection Agency, 2021). The burning of gasoline to power vehicles releases carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which traps heat in the atmosphere and ultimately results in climate change. In addition, our car-based society contributes to other issues such as air pollution, crowded and fast-paced towns and cities and even to social problems like social isolation (Appleyard, 2020).

Transportation at the Field Station

Due to the isolation of the Field Station within Capitol Reef National Park, the only feasible way to reach us is via motorized vehicle. Part of our message of sustainability is to minimize impact in the way we travel, and this includes transportation to and from the Station. Parking on-site is limited, so traveling as a group to minimize the number of vehicles (and thus fuel usage) is encouraged. In addition, we encourage groups to use the most fuel efficient vehicle they can.

Transportation and You

Just as with the other aspects of your stay, our hope is that the awareness you gain during your experience at the Field Station inspires you to make transportation decisions in your daily life that incorporate principles of sustainability. Walking, biking, carpooling, utilizing public transportation and trip-chaining are just some of the mindful transportation choices we can make to benefit all of us. Other potential options include purchasing a more fuel-efficient vehicle when the time comes or considering an electric or hybrid-electric vehicle.
