Sustainability

Overview

Sustainability, broadly speaking, is the practice of living in such a way that recognizes the rights of future generations to meet their own needs. This mindful way of living can occur at the individual level all the way through global practice, and includes such things as how our food is produced, how we use transportation, how we build and power our homes and, in general, how our society is structured.

Recent decades have shown that the collective human impact on the planet is substantial, and the overwhelming scientific consensus suggests that human activity has altered natural processes not limited to air quality, water quality, overpopulation, species habitat loss, consumption of resources and climate change. On both a local and global scale, sustainability affects all of us and the world we live in.

Sustainability at the Field Station

The Capitol Reef Field Station takes seriously its responsibility to educate visitors on the ideas and practice of sustainability. In accordance with the Field Station's mission to model and promote environmental ethics, visitors are invited to have the opportunity to "try out" the principles of sustainability while there. Recycling, minimizing water and electricity use and learning about how to lessen one's impact are just a few of the features of the Field Station. Despite being a facility that is truly "off the grid," guests are able to see that many of the comforts of modern society can be present in a facility that operates in a very low impact manner. Virtually everything one encounters while at the Station, from the solar panels that power the entire campus to the efficiency features in the use of water, power, and lighting shows that lessening our impact on the world around us doesn't have to be difficult or inconvenient.

Sustainability and You

Our hope is that the experience you have at the Field Station inspires you to incorporate what you learn during your time there into your daily life. As Margaret Mead said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
