About the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
The Utah Valley University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is charged by the federal government with regulating the care and use of nonhuman vertebrate animals in research and instruction. The IACUC performs prospective and continuing review of protocols, to ensure that the care and use of vertebrate animals is conducted ethically and in compliance with the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, and with other applicable federal, state, local and institutional requirements.
What activities need to be reviewed?
According to University Policy 652 the IACUC is responsible to ensure the humane care and use of vertebrate animals in research, testing, or teaching conducted at, or on behalf of, the University. No such activities involving vertebrate animals may be conducted without IACUC review and approval. University employees and students and UVU-affiliated researchers must perform all such research and instruction in compliance with the highest standards of ethics, practice, and conduct of each of the fields or disciplines involved in each specific research project or instructional activity.
How do I submit a protocol for review?
We are using the software platform Axiom Mentor to manage applications. You can access the software here. Once you have logged in, select the “IACUC” link in the taskbar, and read the Info Page, which has useful information about application requirements and the protocol review and approval process.
If you have any questions about the process of IACUC review, please contact Dr. Eric Domyan, the IACUC Chair by e-mail or phone (801-863-5422) who will be glad to assist you.
Who do I contact if I have questions/concerns about vertebrate animal use on campus?
You can direct any questions/concerns to Dr. Eric Domyan, the IACUC Chair, or submit them (anonymously or self-identified) using EthicsPoint, selecting category “Other.”
