Overview
The first-ever session of the Summer Civic Institute will be an in-person seminar held May 19–23, 2025, at Utah Valley University.
This rigorous one-week institute will gather the best students from Utah's universities (advanced undergraduate, graduate, and professional) for the study and discussion of the American political and constitutional traditions.
In particular, given the impending 250th birthday of the United States, this year’s Summer Civic Institute will focus on the philosophical, political, and historical significance of the Declaration of Independence.
"The Declaration of Independence states the principles on which our government, and our identity as Americans, are based. Unlike the other founding documents, the Declaration of Independence is not legally binding, but it is powerful. Abraham Lincoln called it 'a rebuke and a stumbling-block to tyranny and oppression.' It continues to inspire people around the world to fight for freedom and equality." (archives.gov)
Each day of the seminar will include primary-source discussions led by distinguished faculty from institutions across the United States, as well as activities outside the classroom such as hiking and film screenings.
Participants receive a $1,000 stipend, meals, and lodging during seminar week.
Apply by May 4 here.
