Faculty Course Evaluation Surveys Information

Chemistry Teacher in front of Chalkboard

We know that feedback is important in your effort to improve the quality of teaching at UVU. We appreciate your assistance in encouraging your students to participate in the course evaluation surveys (CES) process each semester. Here are some hints as to how you can do this:

  1. Explain the purpose and importance of student feedback and how you have used the data in the past to improve your teaching.
  2. Remind students periodically during the evaluation period how many have completed the survey and that you would appreciate all of them taking the time to give you some feedback on your teaching.
  3. Add the following information to your Course Syllabus: The Course Evaluation Surveys (CES) system will be available online the last three weeks of the semester. Your feedback is expected and used by the instructor to improve the teaching and learning experience of the course. Your anonymity and confidentiality of your responses is assured: your instructors will NOT be able to determine what you have said or how you have rated them.
  4. Inform students of the dates that the evaluation will be available online (refer to the Key CES Dates section). Tell or show students how to access the online survey (refer to the CES information for students page) and let them know who they can contact if they need help.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

How do I see my results from past semesters?

You may access the CES system through Canvas. You may also access it by logging in to myUVU, clicking on the "Faculty Resources" top menu option and selecting "End of Term/SRIs" in the My Classes area. There you will see the link to "Course Evaluation Reporting."

If you would like an all-inclusive CES report that has all courses taught by year/semester/term with all the comments and raw data please submit your requested information to BI Services Help at this link.  BI Services Help

Can I Tell How Many Students Have Submitted Their Survey During the Evaluation Period?

Yes. This information is available in the reports area of the CES system.

When Can I See the Actual Survey Results

CES results are made available to faculty as per the schedule posted in the Key CES Dates section of the course evaluation page.

What Information is Included in the Survey Results

The number of students responding, and response breakdowns are provided for each question on the survey, by class section. You will also be able to see summary information for each of the demographic questions in the current survey.

What Information is Not Included in the Survey Results?

The survey is anonymous, and you will not be able to tell whether particular students have submitted surveys or not.

When Can Students Complete the CES?

Typically, students can complete the CES beginning two weeks prior to the final day of classes, until 6 days after the final day of classes for most classes. Please refer to the Key CES Dates section for more detailed information.

Will Students Be Reminded to Participate in CES, in Addition to My Own Reminders and Incentives?

Students will receive reminders through Canvas each time they log in. Also, they will receive an email containing a link to the survey at the beginning of the survey period, and then weekly until they complete the survey or the survey closes.

How Can I Encourage Students to Participate in the CES Process?

The effectiveness of the CES system is largely founded on the instructor's support of that system as a way for their students to provide feedback. Continued reminders and encouragement in class can go a long way to increasing the response rate for your evaluations. You can also send personal e-mail reminders to your classes using Canvas and your course lists. Some instructors choose to provide extra credit. If your class meets in a computer lab, you can allot time in class for students to complete their CES.

If I Offer Extra Credit for Completion of the Survey, How Can the Student Prove their Participation?

The survey is anonymous, but students can print a confirmation receipt after they have completed the survey. If the students have completed the survey without printing a receipt, they can access the receipt by clicking on the link in Canvas or in the CES email they were sent for your class.

I'm a Department Chair, How Can I See Results?

All reporting on survey results is suspended while surveys are open. After the surveys close, you may access the results by logging in to myUVU, clicking on the "Faculty Resources" top menu option and selecting "End of Term/SRIs" in the My Classes area. There you will see the link to "Course Evaluation Reporting." You will be able to access the department chair results in the Reporting area of the CES system. Please reach out to BI Services if needed.  BI Services Help

Can the Students See their Grades Before they Have Taken the CES?

Grades in Canvas are not tied to Banner and are not official grades. If you keep track of grades in Canvas, students can use the Canvas system to guess at their final grade while filling out an evaluation.

Why are Some of My Students Not Getting their CES Emails?

The emails are sent to students' UVU accounts. The CES emails will not be sent to their personal emails and the students may miss them if they have not linked their UVU email to their personal email. Even after they link their UVU email to their personal email, after it leaves UVU we cannot control what happens to it and it may end up in their personal email Spam folder. The email will also return to us as “Undeliverable” if the student’s personal email inbox is full.
