Students and Faculty

WELCOME

A Message from the Vice PresidentVP Academics, Liz Hitch

What an exhilarating learning environment Utah Valley University offers for all of the members of its community!  From the students, as they participate in the “Communities of Engaged Learners,” to the faculty and staff who create those communities…UVU is an exciting place for faculty, students and staff.

One thing that distinguishes really fine universities is that they set very high standards for student learning and development…AND help students to reach those standards.   Standards for learning and the strategies for students to reach those standards are in the hands of an exceptional faculty at UVU.  They are well-prepared in their disciplines and in helping students to engage in the learning of those disciplines.  Faculty recognize that they need to make their disciplines come alive for students, and they use many ways to do that:  engaging students in interactive learning situations such as student undergraduate research, internships, case studies, study abroad…and more.  While instruction at UVU has long been its hallmark of excellence, the Communities of Engaged Learners model helps to convey the principles underlying that excellence.

The Communities of Engaged Learners model provides a conceptual framework that demonstrates why UVU moved from college to university status.  The three key elements of the model are People, Place and Profession.  As part of this model, Utah Valley University, with regard to its students and employees, affirms that it will continue to:

* Produce People of Integrity (who have a solid grounding in ethics and demonstrate leadership and character)
* Assure Professional Competence in the faculty and staff who work with our students (as demonstrated by quality teaching, up-to-date scholarship) and in our students as well (through faculty mentorship, advising and internships)
* Model what it means to be Stewards of Place (with the university providing opportunities for students, faculty and staff to affirm the importance of local, regional and global stewardship and in so doing serve the region and bolster its economic development)

These three components combine to ultimately produce an atmosphere, not only of learning, but of engaged learning that connects the classroom with the community and provides students with real-world, hands-on training with community partners.

What will make the Communities of Engaged Learners model strong?  It is based on the four core strengths of UVU:

* quality teaching
* a philosophy of learning and student development that is student-centered
* a commitment to the region
* education that is opportunity-based for the individual student and for the region the university serves

I invite you to take a look at the many programs and services this great university provides…and to become engaged in our learning community!

Best Regards,
