TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Assistant Professor, Utah Valley University                                                                       2013 – Present

Introduction to Geology (1010) An overview of basic geologic concepts taught through individual and small group assignments. Lectures incorporate animations, drawings, and real-world samples. An optional field trip is also offered.

Earth Materials (3080) A hands-on course focused on minerals, analytical chemistry, crystal symmetry, rocks, and geologic processes operating within the Earth. A term project focuses on using course concepts to address a geologic problem.

Advanced Petrology (4080) This course uses thermodynamic theory, applied petrography, and field-based research to investigate a range of Earth processes. Emphasis is placed on developing individual term research projects.

Resource Geology (495R) This is a “flipped classroom” style course directed by the students in regards to mineral deposit formation and exploration. This class includes a major field and research component.

Himalayan Geology (495R) I co-taught this course with Dr. Steve Emerman and directed discussions focused on Himalayan geology, igneous petrology, and contaminant transport.

Earth Science Seminar (480R) - Organizing guest speakers to introduce students and facilitate discussion regarding the guest’s current research as well as grad school opportunities, internships, and career development.

Field Experience (4600) I am a primary instructor for our capstone summer field school experience, where I focus on teaching igneous and metamorphic processes and mapping.
