Intensive English Language Learning

The mission of ESL Community Education is to provide high quality non-credit ESL courses which help English language students develop proficiency in reading, writing, grammar, communication, and listening skills. The mission of the UVU intensive English language program is to help non-native English-speaking students understand and successfully use academic English at an American university. To accomplish this goal, our faculty and coursework provide a broad range of excellent academic and social opportunities. These opportunities help students develop and show proficiency in the skills of reading, writing, grammar and listening/speaking.
Anyone can register for ESL classes. You do not need to be an enrolled student at UVU. Must be an enrolled student at UVU to participate in the program.
The program offers an introductory course as well as 4 levels of English. Each level has two courses: Listening & Speaking and Reading, Writing, and Grammar. The program has six levels of instruction. Classes focus on the skills of Listening/Speaking, Pronunciation, Reading, Writing, and Grammar. Level six students who qualify may take the TOEFL Preparation class in place of one of the other classes.
Courses meet twice a week from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for  8 weeks. Reading, Writing, and Grammar courses are offered on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Listening & Speaking courses are offered on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The program offers two fifteen-week semesters, fall and spring. Students enroll for 18 credit hours per semester (4 classes) and are in class for eighteen hours per week. Classes are offered during the day from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and in the evening from 5:00 p.m. to 8:55 p.m.
The program offers 4 terms that last two months each (Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall). The program also offers two seven-week blocks during summer semester. Students are in class 18 hours per week each block. Students take 2 classes during the first block and 2 classes during the second block. Classes are offered during the day from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  Each level takes one 15-week semester to complete.
  All Courses are credit-bearing and count toward a student’s Grade Point Average (GPA) and appear on his or her transcripts.
