Makel McCracken’s educational journey was far from easy. Early on, the plans she made for herself collapsed. She battled with going through a divorce, moved multiple times, struggled with mental health issues, and watched her humanitarian English teaching program in Russia get canceled over and over. She began to question her self-confidence and self-worth. While registering for classes at Utah Valley University (UVU), she purposefully filled her schedule to stay busy and take her mind off things.
“Honestly, I am grateful,” she said. “I love exploring, seeing the world, and learning. Out of all the things that have changed, left, and gone wrong in my life recently, my education has been one of the only constants. UVU has helped me see that I am strong and that my future is bright.”
Makel is thankful for donors who support education, including those who give to the UVU Presidential Scholarship she received. “You have given me my education and helped me recognize my strength. Not having to stress about where I will get the funds to pay for each semester has taken such a load off my shoulders. Life is hard for many students. Thank you for helping me and hundreds of others reach our potential and find a home at UVU where we are safe, happy, and progressing.
“Being a Wolverine will forever be one of the best experiences of my life. I hope that we all rise. Rise in our knowledge, rise to happier thoughts, rise in our decisions and goals. No more falling, just rising.”
