Departmental Promotional Item Color Guideline

All campus department promotional items must follow UVU’s primary brand colorway of UVU Dark Green (PMS 7483 when Pantoned) and white as outlined in the UVU Brand Guidelines.

Approved supporting colors include black, white, gray, charcoal, tan, and sand.

Use of non-brand colors—including red, blue, purple, orange, yellow, brown, or similar tones—is not permitted.

These standards ensure all promotional materials reflect a unified UVU identity. Departments must confirm color compliance with UVU Marketing & Licensing before production.

Promotional Products vs Retail Merchandise

PROMOTIONAL PRODUCTS represent the official university identity, which means they must remain clear, professional, and consistent. These items rely on primary identity elements to maintain recognition at scale and across every interaction. Because promotional items are often handed out at events where consumers receive little to no context or explanation, the item itself must communicate its purpose. It must be instantly recognizable as connected to the university. Trend-driven, seasonal, or franchise-inspired designs weaken the clarity that official items require.

Strict consistency also ensures that all departments operate on equal brand footing. Off-brand promotional items carry a high risk profile because they can imply official endorsement or mislead the public about the university’s tone, authority, or values. The primary outcome of promotional products is to build trust by strengthening the clarity of UVU’s identity. For this reason, creative flexibility is intentionally narrow and identity-focused.

RETAIL MERCHANDISE plays a different role in the brand ecosystem. Retail operates within a store environment—supported by signage, campaigns, collections, and packaging—which gives shoppers clear context. Because the retail setting already signals that these items are lifestyle products rather than official university communication, designs can be more expressive, trend-responsive, or fashion-driven without confusing the public. Creative flexibility is intentionally broader, allowing the store to respond to consumer interests, collegiate apparel trends, and seasonal demand.

Retail merchandise does not carry the same equity concerns as departmental promo items because design decisions are centralized and overseen by the UVU Store and Licensing. The risk profile is also lower: consumers understand that retail graphics represent culture and personality, not official institutional statements. The primary outcome of retail merchandise is to build culture, strengthen affinity, and help students, alumni, and fans express their connection to UVU. Its design philosophy is market-driven—expanding how the brand feels—while still remaining recognizable and connected to the university’s core identity.
