Advisement
Professional competency begins with the assessment of personal interests, skills, abilities and goals and mapping out an educational and career pathway with the assistance of an academic advisor. There are two types of advisors available to UVU students: 1) career counselors, and 2) major advisors.
Students who are in the exploratory stage or unsure of what major they would like to pursue or completing general education requirements only are encouraged to seek advisement through the Career and Academic Counseling Center (CACC) where highly trained career counselors guide progress in discovering, evaluating, and determining career pathways. Career counselors provide a full range of vocational evaluation and counseling services to students including assessment of:
- Vocational interests
- Personality preferences
- Aptitudes
- Work values
- Achievement levels
- Career testing (Strong Inventory Interest and Myers Brigg Type Indicator)
- Career counseling
- Career exploration
- Use of the career library
- Use of the computer program, CHOICES
Check out the Career and Academic Counseling Center website for more detailed information.
Students who have selected a major and/or career path are advised by a major advisor(s). Major advisors offices are generally located within the specific major department's area. Major advisors have detailed information regarding degree requirements, class selection and scheduling, instructor and staff information, articulation agreements, graduation requirements, etc. Students are encouraged to meet with their advisor at least once per year to determine a successful career path tailored specific to their needs and interests.
