Frequently Asked Questions
Question: What is the Hourglass Society?
Answer:
The Hourglass Society is an exciting and new recognition program
for employees pledging a challenged amount per pay period for five
years (a gift equal to one hour’s pay per month). Appreciation and
recognition includes:
- An Hourglass Society lapel pin
- Special reception for all Hourglass Society donors
- Personalized communication (campaign-related updates, events and invitations)
- Listing in “thank you” section of Web site and/or brochure.
Question: Can I give an amount besides one hour’s pay per month?
Answer: Yes! The decision to give — and how much to give is a
personal choice. There is a section on the pledge form that allows you
to specify the amount of your contribution.
Question: When will payroll deductions begin for my contribution?
Answer: Payroll deductions begin the first pay period in January 2010.
Question: Will my individual gift really make a difference?
Answer: Yes! Each contribution will make UVU a stronger institution.
Question: Is the specific amount of my gift kept confidential?
Answer:
Yes! A “confidential” privacy envelope is provided to each
employee to deposit his/her completed and signed pledge card. The
contents of the envelope, and the specific amount will only be seen by
key individuals (e.g., payroll officers). This allows your pledge to
be totaled and credited toward the “giving results” that will be
reported on an aggregate basis. The privacy envelope will include your
name so the campaign volunteers and campaign office will know that you
have made a decision regarding your participation.
Question: Do I have to give through payroll deduction?
Answer:
No. Though this is generally the most desirable plan for
employees, the manner of payment is your decision. There is space on
your pledge card for you to provide non-payroll deduction payment
information.
Question: Is there an administrative fee taken from my gift?
Answer:
No. Overhead (the cost of running the campaign) is being paid out
of institutional revenues and not from campaign contributions.
Question: If I receive a pay increase or decrease, will my pledge amount be affected?
Answer: No. Your pledge amount will remain unchanged throughout the
length of your pledge, unless you notify your payroll officer (in
writing) to adjust your gift up or down.
Question: Is my gift tax deductible?
Answer:
Yes! The UVU Foundation, the entity receiving your contribution,
is recognized as a 501(c)(3) non-profit that has been incorporated to
support the mission/vision of UVU through charitable endeavors. If you
are donating through payroll deduction, a cumulative giving amount will
appear on your year-end paycheck and receipts will be sent out in
January of 2010.
Question: What happens to my pledge if I leave UVU?
Answer:
The pledge becomes null and void at the conclusion of your
employment, unless you personally arrange to continue those payments.
Q: If I don’t complete a pledge card this year, will my previous gift be stopped?
Answer:
No! However, we hope those who have generously given in the past will
take this opportunity to sign up anew (i.e., replace their previous
gift). We’d like employees to give serious consideration to the
“suggested” giving level, the priorities and the prize drawing, all of
which were not available to past contributors. Additionally, in a very
meaningful way, the 2009 results will serve as a “new” statement of
support going forward (particularly helpful within the context of a
comprehensive fundraising plan and helps as we extend appeals to donors
who are not employed with UVU). That said, previous gifts will not be
canceled or added to. If a pledge card is completed and submitted, it
will take the place of the previous gift.
Question: How will the funds for the Faculty/Staff Campaign be used?
Answer:
The most urgent priorities for UVU include renovations to the
Science Building, Woodbury School of Business, the construction of a
Center for the Arts and additional classroom space across campus.
Additionally, there is a need to provide additional resources to fund
faculty, staff and student needs (programs, scholarships, faculty
endowments, etc). Unless an employee designates otherwise, funds will
be earmarked for those most urgent needs.
Question: How do I get into the drawing at the end of the campaign?
Answer: THIS IS NEW. . .The follow represent ways to get into the drawing:
- Turn in a sealed envelope with the card containing your information.
- Turn the envelope in within the first week of receiving the material.
Question: What happens if I win something from the drawing?
Answer:
If you are a winner of any prize from the drawing (ie, 7 day Cruise to
the Mexican Riviera), you acknowledge that it will be your
responsibility to pay taxes on the value of the trip (as well as any
other costs/fees that might be associated with the particular prize).
For example, if you win the cruise. . .it includes:
- Royal Caribbean Cruise for two.
- Mexican Riviera for 7 days from Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta!
- Includes cruise and travel-related taxes.
- Valid
for sail dates from January 3 to May 23, 2010, with the exception of
the following black out dates: March 7, 14, 21, 28 & April 4, 2010.
- Certificate Expires May 23, 2010
- NOT INCLUDED: Air transportation, personal expenses and gratuities excluded.
- Winner bears the responsibility of reporting the prize as income – and paying the related personal income taxes.
