Complete Withdrawal
Students who officially withdraw from school or drop classes no later than the end of the refund period may be entitled to
a UVU refund of tuition and fees. Please note, if you drop classes you will owe money back! See a Financial Aid
Counselor before dropping classes.
If a tuition refund is payable and the student received any loan, the refund may be applied to the student’s loan and
returned to their lender. If the student received aid in the form of Pell grant or other campus based aid only, the student
will receive that refund. This refund policy only applies if a student completes at least one credit hour during the term.
Students who formally withdraw or leave school unofficially (but for whom attendance can be documented) may be
required to return all or part of the Title IV funds disbursed. The amount of Title IV aid earned by the student must be
calculated for official and unofficial withdrawals which occur through the first 60% of the semester or term of
enrollment. Thereafter, no return of Title IV funds is required. Important: Financial aid recipients who completely
withdraw BEFORE ATTENDING 60% of the semester will be required to repay financial aid.
If the amount of aid received by the student exceeds the amount earned, according to the percent of time the student was
enrolled, the excess must be returned to the Title IV programs. The amount to be returned is the “lesser of the unearned
amount of Title IV aid or an amount equal to the total institutional charges the student incurs for the payment period or
period of enrollment for which the aid was awarded, multiplied by the unearned percentage of awarded Title IV grant and
loan aid” (484B). Students who do not officially withdraw from school and who cannot document their attendance are not
considered to have earned any financial aid. Such students will be responsible to return all Title IV funds. In addition,
all State and Institutional funds must also be repaid.
Repayment of unearned funds is generally due immediately. Students will be notified of the repayment amount and the
repayment deadline for federal funds. Institutional services such as grade transcripts, enrollment for future terms, may be
withheld until repayment is received. Until Title IV funds are returned, a student who owes repayment will not receive
aid at any other college or university.
Return of Title IV Aid Example:
- Student enrolls full-time for the Fall Semester.
- Pays tuition and fees of $1900 with financial aid in the amount of $2120 Federal Pell Grant and $1750 Federal Stafford Student Loan. Total aid disbursed equals $3870.
- Student completely officially withdraws from UVU on September 19th (2 days past the UVU 100% tuition refund date so no college refund is allowed).
- Student was enrolled in 22% of the semester, meaning she is liable to repay up to 78% of her aid back.
- Student must pay back $209 of her Pell grant to the Department of Education within 45 days.
- Student must repay $1482 of her loan to UVU within 45 days. This is the amount of money UVU must return to the student’s federal loan.
- Student owes $268 of unearned federal student loan proceeds to her lender that must be repaid according to the terms of the promissory note (usually within 6 months of the date of withdrawal).
- Total amount the student must pay back within 45 days is $1,691.
- Remember: The student who completely withdraws AFTER 60% of the semester has lapsed is considered to have earned 100% of the federal aid for that semester. Students who completely withdraw for the semester after receiving federal financial aid are not considered to be making satisfactory academic progress and must appeal to receive future aid.
Warning: Students who withdraw by the last date to receive a W on their transcript (6 weeks into the semester) will not
have completed 60% enrollment for the semester (approximately 9 weeks into the semester). If the student stops
attending between 8-9 weeks, she will owe Title IV money back and receive UW’s on her transcript.
