Eligibility
Only an "Eligible Student" may apply for and receive federal financial aid. Federal
regulations and institutional policy define an eligible student as one who:
- Is a citizen, a national, or an eligible permanent resident non-citizen of the United States.
- Is admitted to UVU with a high school diploma, an equivalent certificate (GED); or if 18 or older, their high school class has graduated, and they have passed a test approved by the U.S. Dept. of Education.
- Has been accepted for enrollment or is enrolled in an eligible program seeking a degree or certificate.
- Is in good standing at UVU and is maintaining good Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP).
- Has had their Financial Need officially calculated.
- Is not in default on any Federal Perkins, National Direct/Defense, Guaranteed, or Federal Family Education Loan, and does not owe a payment on any federal grants previously received.
- If a male and is 18 years or older, be registered with the Selective Service.
- For loans, be enrolled at least half time.
- Meets all other federally prescribed eligibility criteria.
Eligible Non-Citizen
To be eligible for federal and most college financial aid, a student must be a U.S.
citizen, national, or eligible permanent resident non-citizen. An eligible non-citizen
is one who:
- Has an Alien Registration Receipt Card (I-151 or I-551); or
- Is a conditional permanent resident (I-151C);
- Has an Arrival-Departure Record (I-94) from the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization
Service showing any one of the following designations:
- "Refugee"
- "Asylum Granted"
- "Cuban-Haitian Entrant"
- "Indefinite Parole"
- Is a citizen of the Freely Associated States--Republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of Palau (may receive only Pell Grant, FSEOG and FWS); or
- Can provide acceptable documentation from DHS that he or she is in the U.S. for other than a temporary purpose with the intention of becoming a citizen or permanent resident.
Eligible non-citizens must clear the DHS/SSN matching system or will be required to
document their status with the Student Financial Aid Office. A copy of the documentation
papers will be sent to the DHS for confirmation and clearance before the application for
aid will be processed.
Students who are in the United States on an Fl or F2 student visa, a B1 or B2 visitor
visa, a J1 or J2 exchanges visitor visa, and other series visa are NOT
eligible for Federal student aid for most Institutional aid programs.
