GRANT APPLICANT TRAINING SESSIONS

I
f you are a UVU faculty/staff member or student and would like to apply for a CTE Perkin's grant, we highly recommend that you attend one of our Grant Applicant Training sessions prior to applying for the grant.  If you are interested in receiving funding for the Spring 2010 semester and you missed the Grant Applicant Training sessions held in September, you can attend our next orientation on January 12 & 13, 2010.  If you need training before then please view the GRANT APPLICANT TRAINING PRESENTATION  prior to applying for a grant. SPECAIL NOTE:  For the online application to begin the approval process you must read and accept the Terms and Conditions when you are finished filling out the application. 

Steps to Apply

Appropriate Use of Perkins Funds

Appropriate Use of Perkins Funds

  1. Determine a project and budget that will deliver  program improvement and conform to the Carl Perkins Act 2006.  (Please see  Perkins Act 2006 for details).
  2. The Project Leader (Faculty/Staff) will use his or her UVID and password to fill out the online application . (It would be helpful for you to attend an applicant workshop. See timeline for details).
  3. Before the application will be submitted each Project Participant must sign off on the terms and conditions (an email will be sent to each project participant notifying them).
  4. After terms and conditions have been accepted by ALL participants, the Project Leader then submits the application.
  5. Project Leader may follow the review process of the application online by logging into your CTE application (For more information please check  timeline ).
  6. After final review of application Project Leader will be notified through an email of whether or not the grant was approved.

More than one team member
  1. Team up with another faculty or staff member and choose a project leader. This does not mean that they are in charge of doing all the work; this is simply the way in which money, if awarded for your project, will be distributed. (It would be helpful for you to attend an applicant workshop. See timeline for details)
  2. The Project Leader (Faculty/Staff) will use his or her UVID and password to fill out [begin] the online application
  3. Before the application will be submitted each Project Participant must sign off on the terms and conditions (an email will be sent to each project participant notifying them).
  4. After terms and conditions have been accepted by ALL participants, the Project Leader then submits the application.
  5. Project Leader may follow the review process of the application online by logging into your CTE application (For more information please check timeline ).
  6. After final review of application Project Leader will be notified through an email of whether or not the grant was approved.
Business, Industry and Economic Development
  • Provide programs or activities that encourage industry to offer voluntary internships and mentoring programs;
  • Provide programs or activities that encourage involvement in internship programs that provide business experience to teachers;
  • Provide technical training for adults and school dropouts to complete their secondary education;
  • Other approved activities that are related to technical education and are consistent with the purposes of the Perkins Act.
Students and Community Engagement/Outreach
  • Provide students with understanding of all aspects of an industry;
  • Provide students with skills that lead to entry into high wage (an average hourly rate equal to or greater than the average hourly rate of all non-farm occupations as reported by the Utah Department of Workforce Services from the Occupational Employment Statistics (OES) Survey. High skill (programs with minimum training requirements of at least an AAS degree, one-year certification, 360 or more hours of instruction that lead to an industry recognized certification or required state license) and high demand (occupations with 50 or more annual average job openings as reported by the Utah Department of Workforce Services) career fields;
  • Provide career guidance and academic counseling for students participating in technical programs;
  • Provide technical programs for special populations;
  • Assist technical student organizations;
  • Provide students with mentoring and support services in technical areas;
  • Provide instructional aides in technical classrooms and equipment labs;
  • Provide assistance to students in finding appropriate jobs and continuing their education in vocational/technical areas;
  • Support and promote non-traditional training and employment activities to underrepresented populations in technical areas;
  • Other approved activities that are related to technical education and are consistent with the purposes of the 2006 Perkins Act.
Faculty/Staff/Administration

  • Develop, improve or expand the use of technology in vocational/technical education;
    Training of vocational/technical personnel to use state-of-the-art technology;
  • Provide professional development programs, in-service and pre-service in state-of-the-art technical education programs and techniques to teachers, counselors, administrators, support staff, etc.;
  • Provide training in effective teaching skills based on new research;
    Provide programs and training to ensure teachers and personnel stay current with all aspects of industry;
    Provide internship programs that provide business experience to teachers teaching in technical areas;
  • Provide programs designed to specifically train teachers in the use and application of technology;
  • Improvement or development of new technical classes or degrees;
  • Other approved activities that are related to technical education and are consistent with the purposes of the Perkins Act.
CTE Program Support
  • Develop and implement evaluations of the technical education programs being carried out under Perkins funds;
  • Provide assessment of how the needs of special populations are being met through technical programs and activities;
  • Initiate, improve, expand, and modernize the quality of technical programs;
  • Link secondary and post-secondary technical educational programs, including implementing CTE Career Pathways;
  • Establish effective programs and procedures to enable informed and effective participation and increase completion of technical programs;
  • Provide funds for the purchasing, leasing and upgrading or adapting of equipment, and providing instructional aides in equipment labs;
  • Provide training and technical assistance to high school and post secondary counselors, teachers, and administrators;
  • Provide support for other approved technical activities that are consistent with the purpose of the Perkins Act.
