Maureen Andrade, associate dean of University College at Utah Valley University, recently graduated from the 2009 Higher Education Research Services (HERS) Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration at the University of Denver.
For more than 35 years, HERS has offered female faculty and administrators an intensive program that prepares them to be leaders in higher education. The HERS Denver Institute, begun in 2007, is the newest of the three HERS Institutes. HERS Institutes are also held at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania and at Wellesley College in Massachusetts.
“It is a credit to Dr. Andrade that she was selected to attend this very competitive institute for women leaders in higher education,” said UVU Vice President for Academic Affairs Liz Hitch. “UVU continues to be focused on attracting, retaining and graduating capable women students. Dr. Andrade is engaged in a very successful career in academe and can serve as a role model for women students interested and serious about their studies.”
The 32 participants selected for this year’s HERS Denver Institute represented 22 institutions across the U.S. Responding to the current environment for higher education globally, the Institute had a special focus this year on “Women’s Leadership in Times of Crisis: Leveraging Our Responses for Institutional Renewal.” The faculty included more than 20 senior women leaders from a variety of colleges and universities.
Andrade has been at Utah Valley University since July 2008. She was previously chair of the Department of English Language Teaching & Learning at Brigham Young University – Hawaii. Her recent achievements include two book publications, “Language Games: Innovative Activities for Teaching English” published by TESOL, Inc., and a co-edited volume, “International Students: Strengthening a Critical Resource,” published by the American Council on Education. She also recently presented at the World Conference on Open and Distance Learning in the Netherlands and at the 2009 Assessment Institute in Indianapolis.
Andrade’s participation in the HERS Denver Institute was sponsored by the dean of University College and vice president for academic affairs.
